Stolac is a historic town in Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in a fertile valley along the Bregava River. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the region, with traces of life dating back to prehistoric, Illyrian, Roman, medieval, and Ottoman periods.
The town is especially known for its rich cultural heritage and concentration of historical monuments. Among the most significant sites is the Radimlja necropolis, one of the most important collections of medieval stećci (monolithic tombstones) in the Balkans, decorated with unique carvings and inscriptions.
Above the town rises the ruins of Vidoški Grad, a medieval and Ottoman-era fortress that once controlled the strategic Bregava valley. In the town itself, stone bridges, old mills, and traditional architecture reflect the long continuity of settlement along the river.
Stolac is also known for its natural beauty, where the clear waters of the Bregava form small waterfalls, pools, and green river corridors. The combination of cultural layers and intact natural landscape makes it one of the most distinctive historical towns in Herzegovina.
