Ploče

Ploče is a coastal town and one of the most important seaports in southern Croatia, located on the Adriatic Sea at the edge of the Neretva Delta. Its modern development is closely tied to its role as a strategic transport and logistics hub connecting the Adriatic coast with Bosnia and Herzegovina and further into Central Europe.

The Port of Ploče is the second-largest cargo port in Croatia and serves as a key maritime gateway for goods such as bulk materials, containers, and agricultural products. The port’s railway and road connections extend deep into the Neretva Valley and inland Bosnia, making Ploče an essential node in regional trade routes.

Despite its industrial importance, Ploče also has a residential and recreational side, with a waterfront promenade, beaches, and views toward the surrounding delta landscapes. The nearby Baćina Lakes and the Neretva estuary add significant natural value to the wider area, offering opportunities for nature tourism and outdoor activities.

The town was largely developed in the 20th century, especially during the Yugoslav period, when the port and railway infrastructure were expanded. Today, Ploče continues to balance its industrial identity with its coastal lifestyle and proximity to one of the most ecologically important river-delta systems in the Adriatic region.
