The Neretva River rises high in the mountains of eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, beneath the slopes of the Lebršnik and Zelengora mountains, in an area of untouched nature, cold springs and deep forests. The source is located near the mountain pass Čemerno, not far from the border with Montenegro.
Here, at an altitude of about 1,095 meters above sea level, clear and icy water emerges from karst springs and forms the beginning of one of the most important rivers of the Adriatic basin.
The upper Neretva region is known for its pristine environment. There are no large settlements nearby, and the landscape is dominated by mountains, meadows, rocks and dense forests. The river here is narrow, fast and crystal clear.
From this quiet and remote place, the Neretva begins its 225 km long journey towards the Adriatic Sea, passing through canyons, valleys, towns and historical sites before reaching its delta in Croatia.
The source area can be reached by mountain roads from the direction of Gacko and Kalinovik. It is a destination mainly for nature lovers, hikers and adventurers who want to experience the river at its very beginning.
