Metković is a town in southern Croatia situated on the banks of the Neretva River, near the vast wetlands of the Neretva Delta and close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its position along the river made Metković an important trading and transport center throughout history, connecting the Adriatic coast with the inland regions of Herzegovina and Bosnia.
The town developed around river traffic, agriculture, and trade. Even today, the rhythm of life in Metković is closely tied to the Neretva — from traditional wooden boats and fishing practices to fertile fields of mandarins and vegetables grown in the delta’s alluvial soil.
Metković is also known for its rich birdlife and natural surroundings. The nearby wetlands form one of the most important ornithological reserves in this part of Europe, attracting nature lovers, photographers, and researchers. Walking along the river promenade reveals views of calm waters, reeds, boats, and the characteristic Mediterranean vegetation.
With its mild climate, cultural heritage, and strong connection to the river landscape, Metković represents a unique meeting point of river, delta, and sea in the Neretva region.
