Međugorje

Međugorje is a town in Herzegovina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the municipality of Čitluk, not far from the city of Mostar. Surrounded by karst hills, vineyards, and Mediterranean vegetation, it was a quiet rural settlement until the early 1980s, when it became one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations in Europe.

Since 1981, Međugorje has been associated with reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary by several local children on the hill known as Apparition Hill (Podbrdo). Another key pilgrimage site is Križevac Hill, marked by a large cross overlooking the valley. These locations, together with the parish church of St. James, form the spiritual center of the town.

Today, Međugorje attracts millions of pilgrims and visitors from around the world each year. The town has developed a strong hospitality infrastructure, including hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and religious services, while maintaining its rural Herzegovinian landscape of stone, vineyards, and olive groves.

Despite its global significance as a pilgrimage site, Međugorje remains closely connected to its local agricultural roots and the wider cultural landscape of Herzegovina.
