Neretva River

The Neretva River is one of the most beautiful and important rivers in the western Balkans. Flowing through Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, it stretches for approximately 230 kilometers from its mountainous source to the Adriatic Sea.

From Mountains to the Sea

The Neretva rises in the highlands near the mountains of Zelengora and Lebrsnik. In its upper course, the river is fast, cold, and clear, flowing through deep valleys and preserved natural landscapes.

As it continues southward, the river passes through towns such as Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar, where it becomes wider and calmer and shapes the cultural and historical landscape of the region.

A River of History and Culture

For centuries, the Neretva has been an important route connecting inland areas with the Adriatic coast. Along its banks are historic places such as Pocitelj and the remains of the ancient Roman settlement Narona near the village of Vid.

The river is also known for the Battle of the Neretva during the Second World War.

Nature and Diversity

The Neretva flows through a wide range of landscapes, from mountains and canyons to wetlands and fertile plains. Its lower course forms a delta with canals, fields and rich birdlife before entering the Adriatic Sea.

A Unique Name

An interesting fact is that there is another river named Neretva in Ukraine. Although much smaller, it shares the same name.
