Opuzen

Opuzen is located at a place where the Mala Neretva branches off the main stream. It is within the Dubrovnik-Neretva District. It has got about 3000 inhabitants. It was started around the fortress Fort Opus built by the Venetians in 1684. Opuzen was the first administrative and political centre of the lower Neretva up to 1812, when the Metkovic municipality was founded. Since then in the lower Neretva there have been two municipalities, Opuzen and Metkovic. Opuzen had the first school in the lower Neretva opened in 1798. Opuzen was the municipality centre up to 1962, when it was annexed to Metkovic together with its territory. In S.F.R. Jugoslavija the town recorded its biggest growth in its 300 years history. In Opuzen there was an agricultural-indusrial company P.I.K. Neretva, not existing more.
