Capljina

For the first time Capljina was mentioned in 1632 as a village of Mostar kadiluk. When Pocitelj became kadiluk in 1782 Capljina fell under its jurisdiction. In the eighteenth century in Capljina there was a port for the small boats. It was first built under Velika Gradina, on the right bank of the Neretva river, at the place that had been inhabited by the Illyrian tribes since the ancient times. In the Roman time there was a settlement under Mala Gradina.By the middle of the nineteenth century Capljina was already a small town. Construction of the narrow gauge railroad from Metkovic to Mostar in 1885 and farther to Sarajevo in 1890 caused a fast economic rowth. The area has been quite attractive both in economic and in touristic aspect. The unique climate conditions allow two-three harvests in one year. Fruits, grapes, early vegetables and the late vegetables are being grown here.
