Remains of the Illyrian ships found

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

At Desilo, in Hutovo Blato (the Capljina municipality) at the 8 m depth an expert archeologist team led by prof. Snjezana Vasilj found the remains of two Illyrian ships. Because of the specific form of the amphoras found, their age was approximated at 2200 years.

A Roman spear with a preserved wooden handle was found. The traces of an old Roman house and seven ancient graves were found in the vicinity, presumably from the iron or bronze age.

The works were financially helped by the Federal Ministry of Culture, and a valuable expertise assistance was provided by the Underwater Archeology Department of the Croatian Restoration Bureau and the Neretva Divers Club from Mostar.
